Situated on a high peninsula pointing south and splitting the Intercoastal Waterway and Broad Creek lies Spanish Wells - one of Hilton Head’s most exclusive and beautiful communities.
Once the site of artesian wells, where Spanish explorers stopped to fill their kegs before traveling on, the high land still contains many enormous live oak trees and indigenous vegetation from those earlier times. Originally the McIntosh Plantation, the property laid virtually untouched until the Spanish Wells community was born in 1975.
Today, Spanish Wells Plantation offers its 200 homeowners and residents a breathtakingly beautiful setting for living a special life with family and friends on the water. A contained and private plantation with no through traffic, the community provides a perfect location for easy access to the mainland, to the center of the island with its churches, schools, hospital and services and to the south end of the island with its shopping, dinning and beaches. The community is remote, yet not removed. It is secluded, yet not out of easy reach. And those who live there would not have it any other way.
Perhaps the greatest amenity available to residents within Spanish Wells is simply the joy of living there. The community is friendly and interconnected. There is a family atmosphere and a neighborhood quality that you seldom find in a place this gifted.
The Intra Coastal waters that surround the residents in Spanish Wells is an amenity of gigantic proportion and the main reason many residents call this community home. It allows for endless recreation - boating, fishing, shrimping, swimming, watersports, dolphin watching and the most beautiful sunsets on Hilton Head Island. The beautiful, breezy Inter Coastal Waterway is a natural, living visual epic that takes place every single day.
All Spanish Wells residents also enjoy the private community pool and sundeck. Gated and fenced for safety, the pool features ample chaise lounges and a covered cabana with facilities perfect for picnics and birthday parties.
Spanish Wells residents who choose not to become Spanish Wells Club members still enjoy special rates and opportunities to play golf and tennis for a limited number of sessions per year. Residents may play golf at the Club, six times per year at the reduced Member - Guest rate. Residents may play tennis up to six times each year, at the reduced Member - Guest rate of $10/per hour. Additionally, SWPOA members may rent the Calibogue Room of the Spanish Wells Clubhouse for private parties and functions for $400. Please contact the Spanish Wells Club directly for more information.
Situated just behind the Spanish Wells Clubhouse, a 100-foot community dock stretches out into the waters of Calibogue Sound. The site of many lazy fishing expeditions and friendly chats, all Spanish Wells residents have use of the community dock during daylight hours.
The physical amenities of the plantation are managed and operated by The Spanish Wells Club and have been perfectly designed to quietly exceed the expectations of residents, members and guests.
There are over 2 miles of quiet roads within the plantation that make for the perfect walking or jogging trail. And if you are up with the birds, you can even walk the golf course!
The large private pool is steps away from the Clubhouse. It has ample deck space and chairs to take in some sun as well as a cabana that provides shade and the perfect place to sit back, enjoy a good book or just watch family and friends having fun.
Spanish Wells also boasts a brand new 100’ deepwater dock over that stretches west, out over the Calibogue. The covered pavilion and floating dock at the end of the boardwalk are perfect for fishing, crabbing, landing a boat or simply watching a spectacular sunset and sipping a cool drink.
The tennis complex is home to four, brand new, Har-tru clay surface courts, which can be lit for night play. The facility also contains a small seating area for spectators to get up close to the action. USPTA Tennis Professional, Mike Caboy, manages the Spanish Wells tennis program.
The 9-hole golf course, originally designed by George Cobb, opened in 1975. The course takes masterful advantage of the natural pitch and roll of the land as it meanders along side ponds and between many of the majestic live Oak trees commonly found on this special property. The golf course plays to a par of 72 at 6,111 yards from the back tees. The forward tees also play to a par of 72 at 5,106 yards. The men's rating is 70.5 with a slope of 124. The ladies' rating is 69.2 with a slope of 118. The practice facilities consist of a regulation putting green, chipping green with practice bunker and the practice range.
In 2005, the course was completely renovated by local golf course architect Clyde Johnston. Chuck Park is the resident PGA golf professional and club manager
